George McManus - Original Comic Strip Art for B
George McManus - Original Comic Strip Art for Bringing Up Father Daily dated 3-11-39 (King Features Syndicate, 1939). The story of a poor man who strikes it rich, and his social-climbing wife, Bringing Up Father was an instant hit upon its debut in 1913. Maggie, Jiggs, and the rest of the family, entertained millions throughout the years, eventually branching off into other media with several early animated cartoons, a live-action silent comedy, a moderately successful TV show that ran from 1946-1950, and even a stage play. A restaurant, and later a variety of canned foods, took their name from one of McManus' characters, Dinty Moore. When the strip was cancelled on May 28, 2000, it retired as the longest running daily strip in the world. The terrific example offered here shows classic images of Maggie, Jiggs, their daughter, and several supporting characters. Measuring approximately 18.5" x 4.75" overall, the piece is in very good condition. There is some glue staining in each panel, presumably where zip-a-tone was applied, which is common in McManus' strips from this period. The piece is signed by McManus in the last panel. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
