George McManus - Bringing Up Father with Rosie's Beau Topper Sunday Comic Strip Original Art, dated 8-11-40 (King Features Syndicate, 1940). One of the most striking hallmarks of George McManus' strips was his fabulous Art Deco backgrounds. Large chandeliers, flowing staircases, modernist designs, and streamlined decorations were all McManus specialties. The combination of art, design, and humor made Bringing Up Father one of the most celebrated comic strips of all time, and it ran on the first page of Hearst's comic section for many years. Some historians tout it as the first comic strip to achieve world-wide fame. This Sunday followed Maggie and Jiggs' lengthy tour of the United States from 1939 and 1940, and many aficionados consider that continuity to be the pinnacle of the feature. Jiggs has grown weary of recounting his lengthy travelogue, but he gets no respite from the tourist-trap prattling of his friends. This Sunday was bisected between the first and second tiers of the Bringing Up Father strip, and has now been carefully rejoined. The strips combine for an image area of approximately 16" x 21". The first panel, with the Rosie's Beau title logo is a replacement, on green paper. The art has been handsomely hand-colored using watercolor, and is in Excellent condition.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
