George McManus - Bringing Up Father Sunday Comic
George McManus - Bringing Up Father Sunday Comic Strip with Matching Rosie's Beau Topper Original Art, dated 11-3-40 (King Features Syndicate, 1940). Bringing Up Father debuted in 1912, and originally it alternated with two other George McManus features, Rosie's Beau and The Newlyweds. Years later, Rosie's Beau was designated to be the topper for Bringing Up Father while The Newlyweds was dropped entirely. George McManus' art deco details are in full bloom in this beautifully designed Sunday; each panel's background is packed with ornamentation and pattern, and yet McManus keeps the action crystal-clear through superior draftsmanship and careful spotting of his black areas. McManus was a master of the silhouetted figure, and this strip showcases a superb example. This Sunday has an overall image area of 16" x 21.5". The page was cut between panel tiers three and four, and the two pieces have been carefully rejoined; otherwise the art is in Excellent condition. The Bringing Up Father title area was left blank, so there is no glue staining.
