American patriot and statesman (1725–1792) who, with James Madison, is considered the ‘father’ of the Bill of Rights. Exceedingly rare ink signature, “G. Mason,” on an off-white 1.75 x .5 clipped slip. Handsomely mounted within an 8.75 x 11 presentation folder custom-bound in burgundy leather with a color image of Mason. In very good condition, with a vertical fold passing through the first letter of his last name, and scattered creases and soiling. Mason had drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights in 1776 to proclaim the inherent rights of men, which came to be the basis of the Bill of Rights amended to the Constitution in 1791. As one of Virginia’s delegates to the 1787 Constitutional Convention, Mason demanded that a bill of rights be added before he would support it; overruled by his colleagues, Mason became one of three delegates present who refused to sign the finalized Constitution. As one of America’s rarest Founding Fathers, this is the first Mason autograph we have offered in nearly a decade.
