Industrialist, merchant, and ardent abolitionist (1809–1867) who helped establish stations for the Underground Railroad and financially supported John Brown. He played a key role in the Union army as a recruiter for black soldiers, helping to enlist over 13,000 men. Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Stearns in uniform by J. W. Hurn of Philadelphia, signed at the bottom of the image in black ink, “Truly, Your friend, Geo. L. Stearns.” Light dings and creases to borders, some mild foxing to image, and revenue stamp affixed to reverse, otherwise fine condition.
