oil on canvas

George Gillespie’s work represents the culmination of a notable lineage of Ulster painters who have all been chiefly concerned with depicting the Irish landscape. These painters, most of them academic in style and traditional in technique, include Frank McKelvey RHA RUA, James Humbert Craig RHA and Maurice Canning Wilks RUA ARHA. Gillespie originally trained at the Belfast College of Art, attending evening classes there from 1941-1945. Later, in the 1950s, he took painting lessons from the Slade trained artist Robert Boyd Morrison. However, the practicalities of the family bread-making business claimed most of his time and energy up until the age of 53, when he was forced to retire due to ill health. At this point he turned to painting in earnest. Within three years he had sufficient works for a solo exhibition at the Oriel Gallery, Dublin. Further exhibitions were held with Kenny’s in Galway and the James Gallery, Dalkey. Gillespie’s work can be seen in the Department of Environment for Northern Ireland and the Office of Public Works in Dublin, as well as in many private collections in Ireland and abroad (see Snoddy, p.191).
