George Jones Majolica Game-Pie Dish
Three-piece English majolica game-pie dish by George Jones. This oval ceramic serving piece features an applied figural quail as the finial on a removable lid molded to resemble dense leafy foliage. The body of the dish is vibrantly decorated in polychrome glazes and relief-molded with scenes of rabbits among grass and oak leaves on a turquoise ground. The sides include double branch-form handles accented with leaves and knots. The interior is glazed in a contrasting lilac-purple hue, and the piece includes a separate fitted liner in a cream glaze. The underside is finished in mottled green, brown, and yellow glaze typical of George Jones majolica ware and includes an impressed diamond registration mark as well as a partial impressed maker's mark. Exterior bowl with lid: 13.25"L x 8.75"W x 7"H. Interior bowl only: 9.5"L x 6.75"W x 3"H.
