a half plate of John Gulick at his brother Richard's grave, Benecia, California, 1852.

An identical half plate was offered by Sotheby's (April 6, 2000, Lot 24) as part of the Steven Anaya collection of Gold Rush images. That image was housed in a case whose pad was stamped with George Johnson's Sacramento address, and identified by a slip of paper Richard Gulick's Grave in Beneica Calif. w. John Gulick alongside.... Further research conducted discovered that Richard died in 1852 and that John died in 1854. Both were buried in the cemetery on a hill overlooking Benecia, but were disinterred in 1859 and reburied in Brooklyn, New York. The plate is not a copy, but rather an almost identical exposure. Housed in a full leather case with repaired spine, the pad decorated with an urn, and not further identified as having been made by Johnson.

Condition: Plate EXC, and bright, with fine contrast. A sole brown tarnish spot appears in the center of the plate on one of the slats of the fence, otherwise, fine. Resealed with filmoplast P90, with acid free mat placed between the mat and plate.
