George IV transitional pattern Half-Sovereign, 1825. Bare Head. Plain edge. High wire rims. Type of S-3804. WR-248. DM-152. Listed by Wilson and Rasmussen as R5 (6-10 known), Exceedingly Rare. Engraving by William Wyon and Merlen. What is special about this specimen is its date, the year before the coinage was re-engraved by order of the king, as he felt the previous style unflattering (to his rather gigantic ego). Despite some small surface abrasions, this is a delightful-looking coin, PR63 DCAM PCGS, having orange-peel texture to the gold fields and a delicate contrast in the portrait. The strike is full, crisp, exceptionally deep as one would expect on a fine Proof. The digit "5" in the date is blundered. Terner Registry at PCGS, and the finest example Dr Terner could locate in his 22-year search for quality British gold coins.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
