George IV pattern 2 Pounds, 1824. WR-221 (the gold vers George IV pattern 2 Pounds, 1824.
George IV pattern 2 Pounds, 1824. WR-221 (the gold version), but struck in bronzed copper. PF61 NGC. Mottled dark brown surfaces. This is an off-metal strike of the pattern which was the prototype for the Bare Head gold coinage of 1826 (S-3799). Edge not visible in the slab but presumably plain. The bust is romanesque, engraved by the Royal Mint's master engraver, William Wyon, who styled it after Chantrey's marble bust. The exquisitely intricate reverse, a crowned and draped shield, was by Merlen. Fanciers of this style would be well advised to consider bidding on this piece, which by comparison to any others, those in gold, is "for nothing" as the Brits like to say of things that have great value. Very rare, but very affordable.
