George IV Proof $2, 1826. Bare Head style by Merlen after Chantrey. S-3799. Raised Lettered edge (regnal date "SEPTIMO"). Very rare, perhaps 225 struck (mint records are not precise). WR-228 calls it R2, "Very Rare": the Proof-only date as issued in the sets of this year, to please the king. Most seen these days are slightly to badly impaired from poor handling over the past nearly two centuries, as the prior two lots demonstrate. This specimen is truly an exception to the rule. PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC: a Superb Choice Proof with Deep Cameo contrast in the king's portrait and also in the reverse shield, both of which are heavily frosted. The fields are deeply mirrored. Faint hairlines on the obverse field are minor distractions from the sheer beauty of this rare gold coin. The Spink guide book places a value on it of $4,500 (about $9,000 at press time), but only a few ever show up for sale that are this appealing and well preserved.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
