George IV Proof $2, 1826. Bare Head style. S-3799. Raised Lettered edge (regnal date "SEPTIMO"). Very rare. PR62 Cameo NGC. Lots of small abrasions and fine hairlines, especially in the obverse field. This is actually typical if not a slightly nicer example than most, attesting to how casually British collectors (and dealers and auctioneers) have traditionally handled (mis-handled) their own national numismatic heritage. Up until recently, it did not seem to matter if an "Unc" coin was just close to being Uncirculated, nor how badly a Proof had been treated. A new awareness has flowed over Britain in the past few years, however, as the Internet and e-auctions (with their detailed descriptions and clear photographs) have opened up many British collectors' eyes to the realities. It is slowly being revealed that most, not just a lot but most, British milled coins have been mistreated. And now, premiums are building (as shown so often in auctions) for the truly choice coins. We have the unusual situation in our sale of offering three of these Proofs, in varying stages of preservation. In any grade, this is a rare coin, but the nicer they are the prettier and more appealing they become.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
