George III silver Threepence 1765, S-3753.
George III silver Threepence 1765, S-3753. Young bust, crowned 3 on reverse. AU55 PCGS. Rare! Silver was in short supply during much of the early part of this monarch's reign, only freeing up after the war with Napoleon, when the New Coinage was issued from 1817 through 1820. However, the early silver coins are fairly scarce, almost all of them. The 1765 three-penny bit, as it's called in England, is one of the rarest of George's small coins. Technically, this is a Maundy-style issue, but no Maundy Set was issued in 1765 and it would appear that the few coins that were struck did in fact circulate as needed coinage, or specie. This specimen is a darkly toned gray with attractive surfaces showing no undue abuse. In Britain it would be graded EF or even About EF as old-time conservatism rears its head any time a rarity is at stake. Nonetheless, this is one of the few pieces this cataloguer has seen in over 25 years, in better grade such as this. From the Osage Collection. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances.
