George III pattern silver Halfcrown by Fullerton, 1799.
George III pattern silver Halfcrown by Fullerton, 1799. PR64 NGC. Armored "Scottish" bust engraved by John Milton for Colonel Fullerton. Often catalogued as Scots patterns because they were commissioned for Ayrshire by a member of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh, these pieces were originally a "set" of patterns for halfcrowns, shillings, sixpence, halfpennies and farthings, of which the halfcrown (as in this lot) was the largest piece. The portrait is of George as Prince of Wales and Seneschal (an Old French word for "steward" or "old servant") of Scotland. Originals were made in 1799, and a small number of restrikes about 1828 by Matthew Young. This specimen was made from fresh dies, and appears to be an original strike. It's very choice, with handsome gray toning. One of the finest to be found.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
