George III Proof 3 Shillings 1812, S-3769.
George III Proof 3 Shillings 1812, S-3769. Draped bust. Very rare. PR64 PCGS. A subtle coin which takes a bit of studying before you appreciate how nice it is. Slightly mottled gray toning with touches of lilac and gold iridescence. The currency pieces were created to fulfill the short-change situation during the war with Napoleon, and Proofs resulted from a subsidiary bill that accompanied the Act of Union of 1800, in which for the first time in British history "the Crown" called for the minting of Proofs for the Record of each type of coin made each year. The purpose was to have examples for museum depositories but in reality, most years, extra coins were made for collectors (not the public at large but aristocrats). About two decades ago the Melbourne Mint Museum sold many of its duplicates, and this coin may well trace its origin to that source. From the Craig Haller Collection. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
