George III Large Silver Peace or Indian Chief Medal. Undated, Young Bust.
George III Large Silver Peace or "Indian Chief" Medal. Undated, Young Bust, American Colonial Period. 76 mm, 109.8 grams Cuirassed bust of the young king, right, GEORGIVS 111 DEI GRATIA Reverse : Royal Arms undated. Officially pierced, with a silver loop, for suspension. There are different theories as to the dating of these medals, from as early as the 1760s to as late as the issuance of the 1814 dated examples. It has been said the largest diameter examples, such as this one, date from the period of the Revolutionary War, as suddenly the native people, and their military forces, began to have much greater importance to both sides in this conflict. On the other hand, it also seems that the larger medals were issued from the earliest years, and presented only to the most important chiefs. In any case, this is a beautiful example of this exceedingly rare medal. Very nearly uncirculated, with a lovely old grey toning, and no defects or problems. It has also been speculated that many of these medals were sold by the very chiefs who received them, as their weight in silver bought considerable alcohol, and that the chiefs were at least as susseptable to this addiction, which was encouraged by the colonists, as any others in their communities. Any medals thus sold, or exchanged for rum, would have quickly been melted.
