King George II Orders an End to Chicanery Involving Military Payrolls. Document Signed, "George R," as king, 2 pages, recto and verso, 11" by 17", Court at Kensington, August 9, 1758; co-signed by Chancellor of the Exchequer H.B. Legge and two others. Weakness at folds shows signs of unartful but sound repair; yet the signature of the monarch is exceptionally large and so this document, with some slight restoration, will be handsome indeed. In part: "Whereas it has been usual to allow a Number of Fictitious Names upon the Muster Rolls of each of our Troops of Horse Guards and Two Troops of Horse Grenadier Guards... in order to Increase the Allowance of Pay to the several Officers of the said Troops, the better to enable them to maintain their Ranks in the Army and for other purposes... OUR WILL AND PLEASURE NOW IS, that the said Fictitious Names shall no longer be allowed..." Instead, His Majesty orders a pay raise for his much beloved Guards. An unusual document. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
