George II Issues Wartime Orders to the Governor of Maryland

George II (1683-1760), King of Great Britain, Document Signed twice, "George R" and "GR", two pages, 9.5" x 13.5", Court at Kensington, July 5, 1756. In the early years of the Seven Years War (the French and Indian War), George II provides "Additional Instruction to... Horatio Sharpe Esqr. Deputy governor of Our Province of Maryland in America..." He notes that "Whereas by Our Declaration dated the 17 day of May last, We have thought fit to declare War against the French King his subjects and Vassals, and whereas We have been informed that heretofore, in times of War, Our Subjects in several of Our Colonies and Plantations in America, have corresponded with Our Enemies and supplied them with Provisions and Warlike Stores, whereby Our Service has been greatly prejudiced and the safety of our Dominion endangered, It is therefore our express Will and Pleasure that you do take the most speedy and effectual Measure to hinder all Correspondence between any of Our Subjects inhabiting Our Province of Maryland... and the Subjects of the said French King, and to prevent any of the Cononys [sic] or Plantations belonging to Our Enemies... with provisions or warlike Stores of any kind." Preventing trade between the British colonies and French possessions in Canada and the Caribbean proved quite difficult. Explicit orders like these which only partially successful. Trade to the French Caribbean was particularly lucrative for American merchants who had been flagrantly evading British trade laws for nearly a century. Only at the close of the war in 1763 did London seriously attempt to regulate American trade; all of which met with stiff resistance and eventually open rebellion. Partial separation at center horizontal fold repaired, very light foxing, with intact paper seal, else Fine. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
