George Hunzinger Rocking Chair; with coated wire mesh back and seat.; stamped inside right rocker: Pat April 18 1826, NY Pat March 30 1869 HUNZINGER; New York; c 1869; 19 x 33 x 32 inches; good condition, wear due to age, some wear to wrapping, one wire snapped at back of chair, but integrity of seat unaffected; A German cabinet-maker who emigrated to America in the 1850s, George Hunzinger established himself as 'Manufacturer of Patent Folding, Reclining and Extension Chairs' by 1867. His use of metal strips 'covered with threads wound or braided' rather than cane was 'to insure great strength and beauty'. This particular patent went so far as to cover even the grooves into which the strips were laid and the method by which these were secured to the frame. Turned elements were frequently incorporated as an 'ornamental, but not expensive' form of decoration.;
