George Huntington Hartford - Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (New Jersey) A 100 share certifi
George Huntington Hartford - Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (New Jersey) A 100 share certificate for preferred stock issued in 1905 and signed as company President by George Huntington Hartford. In 1858 Hartford began his career working in a St. Louis store owned by George F. Gilman. Within a few years the two had become partners buying and selling tea under the name Great American Tea Company. By the end of the Civil War the two had a few outlets in New York City. In 1869 they changed the name to the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. Upon Gilman's retirement in 1878 Hartford headed the company alone, creating the largest national grocery chain in America, with over 15,000 stores at its peak. There is a punch cancellation lightly affecting Hartford's signature. Extremely Fine. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
