George Herriman - Original Comic Strip Art for Krazy Kat dated 2/19/33 (King Features Syndicate, 1933). Considered by many to be the greatest cartoonist of the twentieth century, Herriman is one of an elite group of comic strip artists (including Winsor McCay, Alex Raymond, Hal Foster and Frank Frazetta) whose work has crossed into the realm of fine art. Admired by such literary luminaries as e.e. cummings, William Randolph Hearst and Gilbert Seldes who, in his landmark 1924 essay, Seven Lively Arts, called Herriman, "the counterpart of Chaplin in the comic film." High praise, indeed. Herriman imbued his work with an abstract surrealism, aided and abetted by his unique use of language, which evolved into a sort of "word jazz" that has to be read to be appreciated. The piece offered here is unique in that it contains no dialogue, a rarity for Herriman. The famous "seesaw gag" is perhaps one of Herriman's best-known and most fondly remembered strips, and we are proud to offer it here. Measuring approximately 19" x 22.5" overall, the piece is in excellent condition, and is signed by the artist in the bottom center. Herriman's originals are highly prized by collectors, and those rare pieces that are not hanging in museums are often very difficult to find. Don't let this opportunity pass you by.
