Producer Lorne Michaels had offered the Beatles $3,000 to appear on the show in a bid to get them to re-unite. In a 1980 Playboy magazine interview, John Lennon stated that he and Paul McCartney were at his New York City apartment watching the show the night Michaels made the on-air announcement, and that they considered taking a taxi to the studio and performing, but were too tired. Harrison was the only one who took him up on the offer, and the performance was later rebroadcast on the show as a tribute following Harrison's death in 2001.
