Union general (1816–1870) whose most decisive victory earned him the sobriquet ‘Rock of Chickamauga.’ ALS signed “Geo. H. Thomas, Maj. Gen’l U. S. V.,” one page, 5 x 8, Atlanta, September 14, 1864. Letter to Charles E. Allen, president of the Fair committee. In part: “I have directed my Qr. Master to send you a collection of trophies from the Enemy’s works around this place, to be disposed of at your Fair.” In fine condition, with a light block of toning to the lower border. Accompanied by an unsigned original carte-de-visite portrait of Thomas in uniform. Thomas’s Army of the Cumberland played a key role in the Atlanta Campaign, and the city had fallen to the Union just two weeks prior to this letter, on September 2.
