Signed book: George Gershwin by Isaac Goldberg. First edition. NY: Simon & Schuster, 1931. Hardcover, 5.75 x 8, 305 pages. Magnificently signed and inscribed in fountain pen on the reverse of an opening page bearing a printed caricature, “For Robert Garland, A Baltimore boy who made good in the big city. With admiration, George Gershwin. Sept. 29, 1931.” Remarkably, he has added eight bars from Second Rapsody, adding “Slowly” and “Slow Theme from 2nd Rhapsody.” In fine condition, with Garland stamping his name opposite the signed page and on the title page, and light soiling to the boards and spine (a bit heavier in places). The volume is housed in a very nice archival, museum-quality custom-made blue morocco clamshell box.
Truly a magnificent item, this book combines a wonderful inscription and an impressive lengthy musical quotation from Second Rhapsody—a concert piece for orchestra with piano written Gershwin in 1931. The “Baltimore boy who made good in the big city” praised by Gershwin was a famed New York World-Telegram drama critic originally from Baltimore whose last name...according to one Hollywood legend...was adopted by a young Frances Gumm for her transformation into Judy Garland. Outstanding in every regard!
