Civil War–dated ALS signed “Geo. G. Meade,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac letterhead, February 10, 1865. In part: "I am sorry I did not see your son, when at City Point…I have had the pleasure of meeting Gen. Dennison but never his wife or daughter…My family you know reside in Philad'a and being a very domestic man, I spend with them all the time I can get away from here and how long do you think that has been in the last 4 years—just twenty five days…I am sure you will agree with me this is pretty hard…You speak of Peace—I do hope you & all good people will earnestly pray for it—but it must come on the right basis—the supremacy of the Union & the final settlement of slavery—I saw the commissioners who recently met our President—and had a long talk with them, but did not infer from this conversation, that recognition of their independence was to preclude all negotiations—I think they have committed a fatal error second only to the one they committed when they went to war—I am glad however our worthy President has listened to them & learned their terms." In fine condition, with slight splitting along folds. Accompanied by a gorgeous custom-made quarter leather presentation folder.
