George Frampton R.A. (1850-1928) Knight of the Ounce Bronze signed and dated on the bronze Geo. Frampton R.A. 1918, raised on an ebonised plinth Bronze height 72cm high This figure seems to be taken from Walter Scott's novel The Talisman, published in 1825 as part of his Tales of the Crusades series. It is clearly indebted to Alfred Gilbert's celebrated figure of St George. The Knight of the Ounce was a Scottish Crusader known as Sir Kenneth who engages in combat with a Saracen emir. After an inconclusive battle the two begin a friendship and the emir, who turns out to be Saladin, eventually goes to the Christian camp disguised as a physician to cure the ailing Richard I. Sir Kenneth is charged with guarding the English banner during the night, but is duped and loses it. He is then saved from execution by Saladin, still posing as the physician, and taken as his slave. Sir Kenneth's honour is eventually restored in combat and he is revealed to be Prince David of Scotland. The only other recorded version of this bronze is in the Imperial War Museum and has traditionally been identified as St George. It bears the insignia of the Royal Air Force on the flag. £10,000-15,000
