Tombstone surgeon who specialized in treating gunshot wounds, and a close friend of the Earp family. Rare ALS, nine pages, 8 x 10.25, no date. Lengthy letter to his daughter Edith. The first page is missing, as well as a portion of the final page which likely contained a postscript. In part: “I told you of our bear hunt on my last trip and think probably you might like to hear how we lost our mules and were left afoot in the mountains…The mules were persistent in displaying a most annoying tendency to start for home on all occasions when not tied, without the formality of asking any questions of their proprietors with a concomitant dislike of work made the company of the animals very burdensome indeed for it required so much care on the part of all of us to watch them.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, and aforementioned paper loss to last page. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope from the Hollenback Hotel in Los Angeles, postmarked August of 1896, as well as a printed biography of Dr. Goodfellow. Goodfellow treated Virgil and Morgan Earp after the gunfight at the O. K. Corral and his testimony was key in absolving the Earps and Doc Holliday of murder charges. He also treated Virgil after he was ambushed, however he was unable to save him. A scarce offering from an important Tombstone resident.
