GEORGE DERN (1872-1936) American politician, mining executive and business leader who served as U.S. Secretary of War. In addtion, Dern co-invented the Holt-Dern Ore Roasting process. While the War Department was under fire for a while, first on account of procurement matters and second, on account of crashes in connection with carrying the airmail, yet I feel we have lived down these troubles in pretty good shape. The alleged scandal about War Department purchaes proved to be entirely unfounded and every member of the Department was proved clean as a hound's tooth. In the past three or four weeks we have been carrying the airmail sucessfully, although on a reduced schedule. I think the trouble we experienced at fisrt was principally due to the weather. If the Army pilots had been able to learn their routes in good weather, they probably would not have had much trouble. As you know, I have appointed a very fine Board of experts to make a special survey of the Army Air Corps and am looking for some construction results therefrom ..."" Excellent content. Usual folds.
