<B>George Catlin: </B></I><B><I>Illustrations of the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians: In a Series of Letters and Notes Written During Eight Years of Travel and Adventure Among the Wildest and Most Remarkable Tribes Now Existing</B></I></B></I> (London: Henry G. Bohn, 1848), seventh edition, in two volumes, 264 and 275 pages, respectively, 360 illustrations, red-cloth binding with gold lettering and illustrations, 4to (7” x 10.25”). Originally published in 1841, this two-volume set features 360 engravings made from the original paintings of George Catlin (1796-1872), an American writer, artist and traveler who, using St. Louis as his base, visited 50 Native American tribes during five trips between 1830 and 1836. In 1838 he assembled his paintings into an “Indian Gallery” for a tour to such cities as New York, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh before setting sail for Europe, where his exhibits and lectures were embraced with more enthusiasm. After he failed to convince the U.S. government to buy the gallery, Catlin eventually sold it to industrialist Joseph Harrison in order to pay off serious debts. This two-volume set contains roughly half of the images Catlin created of the tribes, the originals of which are now stored at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
