A very similar related work, titled Azcelts, was illustrated in Artists International, accompanying an article by Campbell on his painting technique. Commenting on this work, Campbell wrote: "Azcelts is quite a different class of fish. This is my more immediate self having fun the way that playing bongos is fun. It is a lively piece of rhythm I hope and to keep it as lively as possible I used oil bound crayons and inks. Using the coloured crayons I drew in everything other than the blacks or areas of tone. Then with a brush I sloshed on the inks which run off the crayons and fill in the gaps. Here and there I used a knife to scrape off the crayons in order to get down to the paper again - the crayon-stained paper. It has a very brilliant effect. The word Azcelt is just a name I made up from Aztec and Celt since I believe there are great similarities in the two ancient forms of art".
