ALS signed “George,” one page both sides, 6.5 x 4.25, Vice President card letterhead, August 1, 1983. Letter to Philip Habib, President Reagan's special envoy to the Middle East, in full: "Now that you are back on the links (hopefully) and out of the shuttle business, I want to simply add my voice to the unanimous chorus sung by all Habib watchers. You did a superb job. This became even clearer to me in my talks with Gemayal—after tennis. You re-earned the respect of all of us. I am very proud; and I consider myself lucky to have you as a friend." In very fine condition. In his role as special envoy, Habib averted potential Israel-Syria and Israel-PLO wars in 1981, then negotiated a peaceful end to Israel's 1982 siege of Beirut. In this significant letter, Bush mentions his meeting with Lebanese President Amin Gemayal, which had occurred just a few months prior.
