ALS as vice president, one page both sides, 6.25 x 4.25, vice presidential letterhead, March 24, 1987. Letter to Dr. Ray H. Hayes in Louisville, Kentucky, discussing Diane Sawyer and 60 Minutes. in part: "Barbara and I have great affection for Diane. She is decent and honorable and we delight in her success. I think '60 Minutes' did a very fair editing job on the interview; and we have had a big, encouraging response. Barbara & I tried to call Diane right after the show but even the 'pros' at the White House switchboard couldn't find her." In fine condition, with very faint overall toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, bearing a stamped free frank. Bush appeared on 60 Minutes in 1987 in the days after the Iran-Contra story broke. In his interview with Diane Sawyer, he tried to balance speaking out for himself and standing firmly by President Reagan. An interesting letter from a politically difficult period as Bush tried to balance his loyalty to Reagan with his forthcoming presidential campaign.
