TLS signed “G. Bernard Shaw,” one page, 9 x 7, personal letterhead, May 3, 1911. Letter to William Poel. In part: “As you already have twelve speakers, which is about eight more than human nature can bear, and as thirteen is an unlucky number, I think I had better not come on the 8th. Besides, my personal reminisces of F. J. Furnivall would scandalize that solemn assembly. Furnivall was a queer bird. A really faithful account of his attitude towards Christianity, his domestic affairs, and the postcards with which he conducted personal controversy, would be harmless and amusing before the right sort of audience.” In very good condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds (the vertical fold passing through the first letter of the signature), an overall shade of toning, and the typed text faded but legible. The signature remains crisp and bold.
