George Bernard Shaw Autograph Note Signed "G. Bernard Shaw". Irish playwright and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. One page, 3.25" x 4.25", personal note card, Hertfordshire, October 23, 1923, to architect A. Troyte Griffith of Malvern. It reads, in part: "Many thanks for the picture of the Winchester statue. It does not show any inside knowledge of Joan; but I think it justifies the principle of architectural sculpture...So stick up for the profession; and away with melancholy." The statue Shaw mentions is at Winchester Cathedral and was dedicated in 1923, the same year that Shaw published a play titled Joan of Arc; this was shortly after the Catholic Church canonized Joan of Arc in 1920. Troyte was a close friend and associate of Edward Elgar who named the 7th Variation of his "Enigma" Variations "Troyte" after him and his incompetent attempts to play the piano. The note has some light staining but is otherwise fine. It is double matted with a portrait and framed to an overall size of 15.25" x 12.25". The addressed verso of the card is visible through a cutout in the back of this double sided mat and frame.
