George Barr - "The Dying Earth" Illustration Original Art (1976). In 1958, George Barr jumped headlong into the world of science fiction fandom. He had been an SF fan as a teenager and finding organized groups of fans who shared his passion was a revelation. George began to contribute to fanzines, showing his artwork at conventions. In 1962, his work was published in Fantastic magazine. In 1968, the quality of his fanzine art won him a Hugo Award for best fan artist. He traveled to Los Angeles, launched his career as a professional SF artist, and the paperback racks were quickly filled with his cover paintings. Some of his earliest covers were for DAW, but George also worked for Ace, Ballantine, and other publishers. In 1976, Donald Grant published a monograph of his art, Upon the Winds of Yesterday and Other Exploration. George did the dust jacket and interior illustrations for Underwood-Miller's collection of Jack Vance stories, Green Magic as well as the dust jacket for The Dying Earth. The finely rendered ink drawing offered here has an image area of 5" x 7.5", and is in Excellent condition. Notes on the back of the art indicate that it was a spot illustration for the tale "Turjan of Miir", in The Dying Earth; its provocative caption reads, "You are my sister and I will love you." From the collection of Richard and Wendy Pini. Richard says: "George Barr and Wendy knew each other well back in the days when they were both members of Los Angeles science fiction fandom. This piece was a gift from George to Wendy, one of several that he gave to her over the years."
