American historian, Secretary of the Navy, and diplomat (1813–1871) who established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Partly-printed DS, signed “G. Bancroft,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, June 30, 1845. Navy Department orders to Dr. Samuel R. Addison, assistant surgeon in the US Navy, in part: "Proceed to Boston and report to Conno. Downes for duty on board the Receiving Ship Ohio." Signed at the conclusion by Secretary of the Navy Bancroft. Matted and framed with an engraved portrait to an overall size of 21 x 17; the frame's backing bears an affixed Goodspeed's Book Shop label. In very good condition, with overall creasing.
