George B. McClellan Rare Jugate Ferrotype Badge
George B. McClellan: An Exceedingly Rare Jugate Ferrotype Badge from the 1864 Campaign. Pinback photographic badges first appeared in the 1860 campaign. They have been issued for every major party ticket since, and a run of jugates has always been considered one of the central focuses for any political collector. By far the rarest are the jugates of 1864. Only a single style exists for both the Lincoln & Johnson and McClellan & Pendleton tickets. Total known population for both varieties is around a dozen copies! The Lincoln is the more prevalent of the two, owing to the discovery of several isolated examples during the past decade. The present McClellan & Pendleton example, from the legendary Joe Brown Collection, is, to our knowledge, the most recently discovered copy for that ticket, having been purchased in an early 1990s auction. We sold a McClellan & Pendleton in the early 1970s for $2000, a price that, at that time, was higher than a Cox & Roosevelt jugate would command. We also sold an example privately in 1999 for somewhat in excess of $20,000. This example from the Joe Brown Collection is in choice near mint condition with much of the lustrous silvering still present o the brass shell frame. However, the Pendleton portrait is a modern replacement, a nearly undetectable copy taken from the one in the Chick Harris Collection. One would never know the difference without using a magnifier! It may be many years before another example appears on the auction market; we can recall only one other public sale since the birth of organized political item collecting a half-century ago. Original pin on reverse. Diameter: 38mm.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
