An iron horsehsoe, with one partial nail, recovered from the site of Custer’s Last Stand on the Little Big Horn. Horseshoe is attached to a linen backing and framed to an overall size of 9.75 x 10.25. Framed along with the horsehoe is a typed note of provenance which reads, “This horseshoe was found on water ravine, Benteen-Reno Hill, near boundary fence in 1976 by Mr. Hank Weibert. The land is owned by Gilbert Bird-in-Hand, a Crow Indian. John M. Carroll Collection.” Carroll wrote forwards to two books, Witness at the Battle of the Little Big Horn by Earle R. Forrest, and The Glory March by Kenneth M. Hammer, as well as authoring several other pieces on Custer. A very desirable and intact relic from one of the most famous battles in American history.
