an anonymous, shoulder-length portrait of George A. Custer as Major General, produced through a photograph process as a crayon portrait, loosely based upon a photograph taken by Mathew Brady & Co., May 23, 1865 [Katz, K-77]; 15.5" x 19.5", framed with original glass, 28" x 32". This portrait was previously purchased from the granddaughter of John Barcume (1844-1919), a Corporal from Company C, 6th Michigan Cavalry, which was part of the Michigan Brigade, commanded for a time by Custer. After serving in the Civil War between 1862 and 1865, the 6th Michigan Cavalry was sent out west. While in the Dakota Territory, Barcume contracted dysentery and was discharged in November of 1865. The portrait is accompanied by a notarized statement from Barcume's granddaughter explaining that it was originally acquired by Barcume.

Condition: Even toning throughout portrait; some staining and wear to margins of image.
