a portrait of Lieutenant Colonel Custer, dated on or about January 24, 1872, by James A. Scholten. Illustrated in Katz' Custer in Photographs (K-113). Includes penciled inscription below image Brevet Maj-Gen. George A Custer / Lieut-Col-7th U.S. Cav., and the following verso manuscript:

George A. Custer / Lieut. Col. 7 US Cav with Brevet of Maj-Gen Killed, with his entire command in a fight with the Sioux Indians on the Little Big Horn River in Dakota Territory, on the 25 or 26 of June 1876. His remains have since been recovered and interned in the grounds of the U.S. Military Academy, at West Point. He was born in New Rumley Harrison Co. Ohio Dec. 5, 1839. 

Condition: Light soiling.
