The present silkscreen in colors is a beautiful work by the well-known German artist Georg Karl Pfahler. It shows a typical abstract compositions of a small number of colors and geometric shapes. Pfahler initially worked with colored ceramics, which sharpened his understanding for the use of color, space and simplified form. His later works clearly reveal his interest in works from artists such as Barnett Newman, whom Pfahler knew personally.

The silkscreen is signed with pencil lower right ‘Pfahler’. There are a number of horizontal creases in the depiction and a number of handling marks throughout. The upper left corner is also slightly creased. The edges of the sheet are minimally toned. The image size is equal to the sheet size of 70 x 70 cm.



Georg Karl Pfahler (1926-2002)

Georg Karl Pfahler received his first artistic training at the Nuremberg Art Academy in 1948, which was followed by further classes at the Art Academy in Stuttgart, until 1954. His teachers were Manfred Henninger, Karl Hils, Gerhard Gollwitzer and Willi Baumeister, who deeply influenced his early works. In 1956, Pfahler was involved in the founding of the ‘Group 11’ in Stuttgart, whose members were inspired by Action Painting and the Informel. In the late 1950s, Pfahler was highly interested in ‘Formative Art’ and finally focused on the so called ‘Hard Edge’ movement. Georg Karl Pfahler was an internationally renowned artist and also taught as an academy professor in Nuremberg, between 1984 and 1992. (cbo)
