Gentleman's vanity chest with museum display card reading "Cedar Wood Chest given to Colonel Kit Carson by grateful citizens at the end of the Navajo expedition, 1864-1865 Loan - Wallace Cheetham"; along with copy of loan agreement dated June 4, 1955, signed by Wallace Cheetham, describing this wood chest, as "K.C. in shell on top of lid, owned by Kit Carson"; with other items that were loaned for display to the Kit Carson Memorial Foundation. Also, loan agreement describing chest loaned to Taos Historic Museum by Joyce Walpole, daughter of Wallace Cheetham. The Cheetham family in New Mexico were well-known pioneers who rented a houseto the Carson family at the turn of the century. This chest was obtained by a prominent Arizona collector from an auctioneer who represented Ms. Walpole, nee Cheetham. The chest measures approximately8-3/4" in height by 14-/14" in width and shows shell inlaid initials "K C" with a diamond shaped inlay at each corner.
