Gentleman’s Collar Box With Thermoplastic Lid, 4.75” x 4.75” x 3.25”, ca. 1877, adapting a design from one of the more celebrated thermoplastic photographic case lids. Shown is Thomas Crawford’s 1858 statue of George Washington in Richmond, Virginia, which was later incorporated into the Great Seal of The Confederate States of America. When the popularity of thermoplastic cases waned after the Civil War, Scovill Manufacturing of Waterbury, Connecticut acquired the Washington monument half plate case dies and reworked them for a square collar box lid. The box is of simple pine construction with two hinges and a small brass hasp. Minor chips to extremities, more recent application of green felt to inside and base. Overall fine condition.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
