Gentleman Jim (Warner Brothers, 1942). Insert (14" X 36"). Jim Corbett introduced scientific methods to bare-knuckle boxing, and Errol Flynn stars as the office clerk-turned-boxer. Corbett gathers enemies with his boastful style, including a high-society young woman (Alexis Smith), who eventually warms him. "Gentleman" Jim wants to challenge reigning heavyweight champ John L. Sullivan (Ward Bond), and they finally meet in a bout governed by the new Marquis of Queensbury rules popularized by Corbett. The fight went 21 rounds, and Flynn displayed toughness equal to his character. He did all of his own stunts in the film, and even after he suffered a mild heart attack, he came back and finished the picture without ever using a double. Even more impressive, the mustache that he sports is all Flynn. Three fold lines divide this insert into quarters, and one of the fold lines has been tape-repaired. Tape also reinforces the corners and patches some pinholes, but of course, Errol Flynn's image needs no help. Fine.
