1863 Territorial cover. Old style Wells Fargo cancel. Nice strike. Letter is from FAS Jones to Captain James Jones in San Fraincisco. The Jones family was large and James seemed to stay home in San Francisco and direct money and supplies to his brothers. The letter is very interesting (FAS has sent $500 to pay for contracts for the Chicago and Manchester mines in Alpine County, California, Frank is doing work on the Mountain and Mount Eaton claims, he will not sign a contract for the IXL mine without money in hand, the Newman Mine is so close there might be legal troubles in the future, etc.) The Jones family was indeed a California family. But Silver Mountain was just across the Nevada border and trips to Genoa and Carson city would be quite common. As a matter of fact Frank Jones wrote a lengthy article for the Territroial Enterprise on the improvements of travel from Placerville to Virginia City between 1859 and 1865 (a tanscription is included).
