General Winfield Scott Hancock Autograph Letter Signed to Former Confederate Daniel Ruggles “Winf'd Hancock”. Two pages, 5.5” x 8.5”, Washington, D.C., November 17, 1870, in ink, to General Daniel Ruggles. General Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) responds to a former foe, Confederate General Daniel Ruggles, as a result of a misdirected correspondence. The letter reads in part: “I presume the card, which came to my room…was one sent by you to General Morrison, who lived opposite to me in the same hall and which was probably brought to my room by mistake- Any how I should have been glad to have met you: With old friends who have retained my esteem, I am especially particular- on such delicate matters as visiting…”. Hancock was a career army officer who served with distinction in the Mexican War and was especially known for his personal leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg. Ruggles commanded a division during the Battle of Shiloh. The paper exhibits some uneven toning and there are some mounting remnants on the verso of the integral sheet, else good condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
