One page, 5.25” x 7.5”, on Treasury Department letterhead, Washington, September 8, 1887, in ink, to Louis Garesché. The narrative is clear, simple, faithful to the facts and given in Excellent English.” In 1887 Louis Garesché wrote a book about his father, entitled Biography of Lt. Col. Julius P. Garesché. Lt. Col. Julius P. Garesché who had been Rosecrans's chief-of-staff who had been killed by a cannon-ball while leading a column in a gallant attempt to regain a lost day at the battle of Stone River.
