General William Starke Rosecrans Autograph Letter Signed “W. S. Rosecrans”. One page, 5.25” x 7.5”, on Treasury Department letterhead, Washington, September 8, 1887, in ink, to Louis Garesché. The letter reads: “My dear Louis: I will comply with your request as soon as I have had time to read the book carefully. The opening chapters which I have read strike me favorably. The narrative is clear, simple, faithful to the facts and given in Excellent English.” In 1887 Louis Garesché wrote a book about his father, entitled Biography of Lt. Col. Julius P. Garesché. Lt. Col. Julius P. Garesché who had been Rosecrans's chief-of-staff who had been killed by a cannon-ball while leading a column in a gallant attempt to regain a lost day at the battle of Stone River. Presumably he has asked his father's former commander to review the book. General W. S. Rosecrans (1819-1898) gained fame in the Civil War for his actions at Corinth, Stone River and Chickamauga. The letter has some light soiling, else it is in very good condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
