<B>General William S. Rosecrans Signed Photograph</B></I> "<I>W.S. Rosecrans</B></I>". 2.75" x 4.25", np, nd. This <I>carte de visite</B></I> was made by "C.M. Bell of Washington, D.C."; their makers mark is present in gold on the lower front mount and again on the back in a larger size. Rosecrans led the Union Army of the Cumberland to a victory at Stones River, for which he was given the thanks of Congress. His defeat at Chickamauga cost him his command. This is a rare photograph; the definitive and exhaustive Sanders reference book has no price listed for a signed photograph of this general, and only two prior sales records are listed in the American Book Prices Current since 1975. The photograph is in fine condition. The signature is somewhat light, with some mild soiling visible on the light part of the emulsion.
