General William S. Rosecrans Pair of ALS General William S. Rosecrans Pair of Autograph Letters Sign
General William S. Rosecrans Pair of Autograph Letters Signed. The first ALS is signed, "W.S. Rosecrans Brig. Genl. U.S.A." One page (two pages glued together), 7.5" x 16.5", Headquarters, A.O.W.V., Clarksburg, Va., August 6, 1861. This letter was written to a Capt. Benham and it lists several orders for him to follow once he arrives at the headquarters of the Brigade of the Kanawha. It is a long and detailed list of orders.

The second ALS is signed, "W.S. Rosecrans." One page, 5" x 8", Washington D.C., June 20, 1888. The content of this list is interesting in that it mentions the Battle of Chickamauga, after which Rosecrans was relieved of his command. It reads in part, "…I was so interrupted that I had not time to drop you a line or even to refer my own Mss. for the losses in killed and wounded at Chicamauga…" [sic] The letter goes on to list the figures of those killed, wounded, and captured.

The letters are both in very fine condition; usual folds are present; the longer letter has soiling along its fold lines. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
