From the John Coffee Hays, Applewhite-Clark Collection. Daguerreotype of a painting of General Sidney Sherman. He organized a company of volunteers in Kentucky and led then to join in the Texas Revolution in 1835. It is said that this company carried the only Texas flag that the Texans had for the Battle of San Jacinto. Sherman commanded the left wing of the Texas Army during the battle. He is given credit for the battle cry “Remember the Alamo”. Following the battle, Sherman was sent to the United States to raise more troops for Texas. He later served in the Seventh Congress of the Republic. Early in the American Civil War, Sherman was appointed commandant of Galveston, but, because of failing health, he had to retire to his home near the San Jacinto battle ground where he spent his final years.
